Jennifer Hale, actress of voice acting, said that in 1998 she was paid for a role in MGS only $ 1200

Actress Jennifer Hale does not need to be submitted: she gained fame, voicing such characters as Samus Aran from Metroid Prime, Bastil Shan from Knights of the Old Republic, but, of course, the real commander of Shepard from Mass Effect. She is also known thanks to the Metal Gear Solid Games from Konami, in which, since the creation in 1998, she played cunning geneticist Naomi Hunter. But in one of the recent podcasts, Hale said that for the first work on MGS, where she voiced this important character, she was paid only $ 1,200.

Previously, Hale avoided the direct mention of Metal Gear Solid in an interview, saying only that last September "The game earned $ 176 million" and at the same time received an hourly salary that was " much less than I wanted". However, in the episode of the podcast My Perfect Console, released this week and in early access, Hale quickly answered the presenter’s question and critic Simon Parkina that it was a game worth $ 176 million: it was Metal Gear Solid.

Hale made this revelation, answering the question about the inconsistency of the wages of actors of voicing in the gaming industry and the money that bring AAA games. According to Hale, this suggests what is happening in modern culture. So, she noted that the average salary of the general director in the 60s of the last century was 20 times higher than the salary of an ordinary employee, in the 80s – 40 times, and today – 399 times.

For each dollar that an ordinary person earns, and [actors of voiceing] are ordinary people; All actors, operator, ordinatives who are not celebrities are ordinary people, we earn one dollar for every 399 dollars that earn [leaders].

Nevertheless, "I love [metal gear]", – Hale said. "It was such a crazy departure from everything that I did before. I fell in love with her because she was magnificent, and for the fact that she was so unique. It is dark, mysterious, tense, and I liked everything in it.

Currently, Hale is one of many actors of the voicing of a video game ready for a strike due to the fact that, as they stated by Kotaku, is "existential struggle to maintain their rights to their votes, their images, because this is what they make money, as well as for receiving a salary that will keep up with inflation so that they can continue to be professionals in this space from an economic point of view".

According to her, in the 80s something happened when the well-being of the company was no longer determined by the well-being of those who worked in it. During her participation in the podcast, Hale emphasized this thesis and said that she wants the voice actors to receive the residual deductions for the work on games in the future "according to a flexible structure that would take into account the interests of indie developers, budgets and command capabilities. That’s what I would like to see".

Metal Gear Solid remaster will be included in the upcoming collection of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection, the release of which is scheduled for October 27, 2023. The first volume of the collection will include the first five parts of the franchise: Metal Gear (1987), Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990), Metal Gear Solid (1998), Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001) and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004).
